Hawaii FCU History

Chartered in 1937, eight employees came together to establish the employer-based Honolulu Construction and Draying Employees Federal Credit Union. Through a strong commitment to making banking easy, personal, and rewarding for its employees and members, HC & D EFCU experienced steady growth.

In 1978, the credit union changed its name to HC & D Community Federal Credit Union, and a new community charter expanded its ability to serve the Kalihi community. In 1984, the organization became Hawaiʻi Federal Credit Union, reflecting its growing commitment to serving communities across Oʻahu.

Today, Hawaiʻi Federal Credit Union proudly serves members through its longtime presence in Kalihi and its newest branch in Waipahu. The opening of the Waipahu Branch marks an exciting new chapter in the credit union's history, expanding access to personalized financial services while strengthening its commitment to the families, businesses, and communities of West Oʻahu. As it has since 1937, Hawaiʻi FCU remains dedicated to helping members achieve financial success through trusted service, local relationships, and a commitment to putting people first.

Why Bank with a Credit Union

Credit unions aren’t just convenient; they are run with a decidedly different approach than a traditional bank. Credit unions are built on the simple idea that member-owners can pool their funds and make low-interest loans to each other. This concept debuted in 19th-century Europe as an alternative to cooperative banking—sort of the people’s way to bank more affordably. As Canada followed suit and successfully instituted credit unions, two American businessmen—Pierre Jay and Edward Al Filene—brought the idea to the states. The pair is credited with rallying citizens behind the first state credit union act, which passed with flying colors in Massachusetts in 1909.

A Message from Our President & CEO

We're Excited to Join the Waipahu Community

Dear Hawaii FCU Members,

It is with great excitement that I welcome you to a new chapter in the history of Hawaiʻi Federal Credit Union as we officially become part of the Waipahu community.

Opening our new Waipahu Branch is more than adding another location. It's a commitment to serving the people, families, and businesses that make West Oʻahu such a vibrant and growing part of our island. We look forward to building lasting relationships, supporting local organizations, and helping our neighbors achieve their financial goals for generations to come.

As we celebrate this milestone, I also want to reaffirm something that will never change. Our roots in Kalihi remain as strong as ever. Kalihi has been the foundation of Hawaiʻi Federal Credit Union for decades, and we remain deeply committed to serving our members there with the same personalized service, trusted financial guidance, and community involvement that have always defined who we are.

Whether you visit us in Kalihi, Waipahu, or connect with us digitally, our mission remains the same: to provide exceptional financial services while putting people first. Every decision we make is guided by our commitment to improving the financial well-being of our members and strengthening the communities we proudly serve throughout Oʻahu.

To our longtime members, mahalo for your continued trust and support. To our new neighbors in Waipahu, welcome to the Hawaiʻi FCU ʻohana. We are honored to be part of your community and look forward to serving you for many years to come.

We invite you to stop by our new Waipahu Branch, meet our team, and discover how Hawaiʻi Federal Credit Union can help you reach your financial goals.

Mahalo for allowing us to serve you.
